The Miracle Antioxidant Food and 2 Skincare Products That Are Antioxidant Rich

Nutrimetics Restore Anti-Ageing Day Crème SPF 15

Did you know Prunes have more antioxidants than any other fruit or vegetable? No really, I didn’t believe it either. Even Pomegranates. I always thought Prunes were just good for your digestive system. The thing is, science isn’t exactly my forte. I know antioxidants are something we should look for in our food, and even our skincare, but why?

You know me, healthy insides isn’t something on the top of my “care about” list. Yes, yes, many of you have told me off about that, but the fact of the matter is, I care about my outsides a little lot more. Eating things and doing things just so I am healthy on the inside is not good enough for me. So, should I care about antioxidants if I am only interested in my looks? Supposably, I should.

So, these are meant to make us look good?

How Do Antioxidants Keep Us Looking Good On The Outside?

This is the question I ask myself whenever a skincare ingredient crosses my path (just remove ‘Antioxidants’ and insert ingredient of discussion). In this case, I got the answer I was looking for from dermatologist Leslie Baumann.

“Antioxidants save cells from a significant amount of environmental damage,”

“Antioxidants work their magic by turning free radicals—molecules that form in the body when you’re exposed to UV light and other environmental assaults—into benign compounds, stopping them from causing inflammation, DNA mutations, and collagen loss. That’s why increasing your intake of antioxidants can help prevent wrinkles, spots, and maybe even skin cancer.”

Awesome, by now we all kind of know environmental damage is one of, if not THE biggest contributor to aging. Sun spots are my current kryptonite and I hate them with a passion. Anything that can help me fight that is worth a look.

Consuming Antioxidants

The above answer from Leslie made me rethink my whole “insides don’t matter” mantra, and got me wondering about Prunes being the richest source of Antioxidants than any other fruit or veg. I like Prunes, but they aren’t a fruit I can sit and eat everyday. They are sticky and look a bit weird. I have always heard about Prune juice but my theory has always been that when you juice a fruit, you loose all its antioxidants, right? Again, I am proven wrong.

According to Australian juice company, Sunraysia, their Prune juice contains 3 times the amount of antioxidants than your average Pomegranate drink, and all you need is one shot a day to get all the good stuff you need. That sounds pretty easy. I recently gave the juice option a go and it was surprising how nice it actually tastes. I won’t lie, it looked pretty mean coming out of the bottle but if you are used to Prunes than you know that they aren’t the prettiest fruit in the world.

So it turns out consuming antioxidants are really not that hard to do, and can be quite tasty!

Skincare Antioxidants

When I discover something that can work for my skin, I like to consume it in as many ways as possible. This means skincare products as well as my daily shot of Prune juice, because as far as I know, you cannot have TOO MANY antioxidants. Here are my skincare picks for products rich in antioxidants.

O Cosmedics – Gentle Antioxidant Cleanser

This gel cleanser feels amazing to use. I love that it is a ‘cosmedical’ product, so it is on the real strong side of skincare.

Official Description: A gentle daily facial cleanser strengthened with powerful antioxidants. Fortified with anti-pollutant boosters that trap and remove dirt and excess sebum, the V* peptide complex™ leaves the skin super hydrated and refreshed. It is suitable for all skin types including reactive and rosacea skins, post peel, laser and surgery cleansing.

AU $49 rrp – O Cosmedics is an Australian professional use product so it is only available from clinics. Phone 02 9712 8188 for your nearest stockist.

Nutrimetics – Restore Anti-Aging Day Crème SPF 15

Nutrimetics is something I have really been getting into of late. Their newest range harnesses the antioxidants found in the most unusual of sources, Sauvignon Blanc. Drink up, ladies! Ok, no, not quite. This cream however does actually do good things, unlike the wine, which usually leads to bad drunk texts at 3am.

Official Description: Nutrimetics Restore Anti-Ageing Day Crème SPF 15 is a daily skin innovation that works to reduce the signs of skin ageing, including pigmentation. It formula works to reduce wrinkles and contains sauvignon blanc which is rich in antioxidants.

AU $56 rrp from Nutrimetics Australia. For US and Canada contact the distributor, Avalla

  1. Bit TMI but I had to eat prunes as a kid for digestive issues, and I didn’t mind them. But for some reason now that I’m older I just can’t stomach the idea of eating them. Maybe I’ll buy some prune juice instead. :)

Hahaha i know what you mean. I think that is the main reason people probably eat Prunes, but it is good to know they are actually suitable for another benefit. Antioxidants!

How interesting…who would have thought those gooey little buggers would actually be good for your skin. I’ve never tried nutrimetrics, will have to give it a go. I did have the pleasure (ahem) of trying O Cosmedics after encountering them at a trade show recently and find it to be HORRID! There packaging is terribly naff and although they claim to be “natural” the aromas are so clearly chemically enhanced that I couldn’t bare putting it on my face. Let’s just say I’d rather eat a bag of those prunes than try their rubbish again.

    • Kimmi says:

Oh no Lilly, that is a shame you didn’t like their products. Well definitely give the bag of prunes a try …. or drink the Prune juice. I swear to god I never thought the prune juice would actually taste so pleasant. I thought it would be horrid but it went down a treat, and a shot a day is all you need!
