Everyone has a different perception of what is “cheap” and “expensive”, and especially in current times, these perceptions are changing. But, I think our own thoughts on prices are an ever evolving thing and somewhat depicted by our own financial security.
When I was 13, any cosmetic that cost over $15 seemed excessive to me. Girls at my school would be buying Revlon or Max Factor and I thought that was so far out of my price range. Today, I look at items from those brands as really affordable. But back when I was 13, I didn’t have a job and pocket money was a thing of the past.
Todays question is about the cost side of beauty products. For me, the most I have ever spent would be US $75 (plus tax) on my Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion Exfoliating Cream. Worth every penny!
Now, there are some rules for answering this question.
- Must be a SINGLE item, such as a lipstick, skin cream, foundation. NO palettes, kits, gift packs, brush rolls, etc.
- No tools, such as a Clarisonic, hair styling tool or makeup brushes
- Cannot be a beauty treatment or service, including Shellac, Acrylic or Gel nails, etc.
I would really love to know what that beauty product was. Will you tell me by leaving a comment below?

The Urban Decay Book of Shadows normally run in the $55 range and I have 4 of them (Book of Shadows 2 & 3, UD Loves NYC, and 15th Year Anniversary)
Those babies do run a high price tag, but I would consider them in the Palette category. Do you know the highest amount you have spent on a single product? Like a lipstick, eyeshadow, foundation, etc?
I’m a real cheapskate so the most I’ve ever spent was $40 on Moroccan Oil back before it was big and there were a heap of different Argan oils available. Apart from that $30 on 1 cosmetic item is about my limit and that’s extravagant.
You are not a cheapskate, Jen! Everyone has a different take on value and that is why I wanted to ask this question. I think sometimes beauty can be so addictive that prices can be overlooked when you want something so much. I definitely am weak in that way hehe.
My most expensive is my natura bisse oxygen complex serum. It’s $300 & worth every penny. I purchaed in April & I still have over 1/2 left & I use 1 pump every night. This week I purchased 2 NYX lippies for $9.95 at groove so my spending is usually low to mid range. This serum was a major blow out for my pocket monies.
Haha, you kind of balance yourself out. NYX and Nature Bisse. Love it!
$49 for the Dior Addict lipstick. Worth it though!
I still haven’t tried on of those!! Ahh, all the beauty blogger pressure is getting to me though and I may crack very soon.
I’d read some really good stuff about Bobbi Brown’s Vitamin Enriched Face Base, and loved that it’s kind of a moisturiser and primer in one. Alas, it’s not that great on my combo/oily skin, but I’m still using it up. From memory it’s just over the $80 mark, but I’m only half way through and I purchased it back in Feb, so I guess it’s pretty good value since it goes a long way.
Bobbi Brown is one of those brands that do lend towards the high prices in Australia, but generally their stuff is amazing. I particularly like their Hydrating skincare range. I haven’t heard much about the Face Base but it sounds like it would be good for my dry skin!
Wow, surprised people would actually spend up to $100! I chose $20-$50, and only because Revlon foundations are pricey in Australia. Otherwise, I wouldn’t spend that much money on a single makeup product, not without beating myself up and returning it afterwards
Hehehe Michelle, I know that feeling. I have never done it with cosmetics ….. but shoes, yes! I once bought a pair of $600 boots and barely made it back to the car before running back to the store to return them. I felt like I was going to pass out!
