Sunday Funday Poll – Do you care if a beauty product is Animal Cruelty Free?

Win this and a zillion other things!

Each year I like to send little Christmas gifts to a select few people I have worked closely with over the previous 12 months. I am not a rich person but I would always buy something to show my appreciation. This year I made a change and decided to instead donate that money I would usually spend to some of my favourite animal charities, Doggie Rescue and WSPA. In the case of those I always send Christmas cards to, I purchased a beautiful selection of gift cards from Doggie Rescue which means the charity gets the money rather than some big industry gift card company. My new direction got me thinking.

I have always been a passionate animal lover, campaigner and rescuer. My pack of rescue dogs (2 of which were from Doggie Rescue) can back me up on that. I always make financial and goods contributions, but what could I do in the beauty realm?

Levi came to us from Doggie Rescue

Now by no means am I turning this blog into a Vegan or Cruelty Free only beauty blog, because quite frankly there are people out there who do a far better job of it than I ever could, such as My Beauty Bunny. What I do want to know though is if you, my fabulous readers, care if a product is Animal Cruelty Free?

If you are happy to expand on your answer, would you like me to state whether a product is animal cruelty free in my reviews and posts? Is there something else you would like me to mention about a products use of animal products?

My Answer: I really like it when I find out a product or brand I love is vegan or cruelty free and against testing on animals, but I have to say that previously I have not made a concerted effort to pay attention prior to purchasing it. Of course I am personally against the practice of using animal products in a cosmetic, or testing ingredients on animals. My goal is to pay a bit more attention and if possible buy a cruelty-free version of a product.

When buying products, I don’t ask or look for the ‘don’t test on animals’ label but if I spot it, then it’s great to know. It makes me feel better, but like I said, not one of my main concerns at the moment.. Sounds so heartless!

There are brands I love which isn’t cruelty free, for example … Maybelline. But because they offer products which comes at a lower cost, as a student, there’s not much of a choice! :(

So as much as I’d like to be against animal cruelty… I don’t have that financial support!

I should start looking at cruelty free make-up companies though! ^_^

I’m sure stating whether the product is animal cruelty free or not will always be helpful! :)

Thanks for your great comment Tram. I agree it can be difficult to be earth and animal conscious when you have financial restrictions, especially in Australia. I hope including a statement about a brands stance on animals will help everyone to find something that does work with their belief system.

I’m new to this since I recently came across My Beauty Bunny which lead me to Peta’s lists. I was shocked to see Neutrogena on the list of companies that tests on animals. I am using up whatever products I have that aren’t animal friendly and will never buy them again. I can’t figure out how Ellen Degenres (sp) is a spokesperson for Cover Girl/Olay when she is such an aninal activist. I bet alot of the faces seen on the products in magazines have no clue they are tested on animals.

Last week, I purchased a bunch of Revlon’s foundation that was 75% off at CVS and three Physician Formula’s matt eye shadow quads (I love this quad!) I even bought a couple of lip liners from Too Faced.

Hard to walk from the L’Oreal & Neutrogena products I love but there are alternatives out there.

That is a great point Napier. I too wonder if celebrities truly know the depth of what they are endorsing. I do know that some celebrities rely on the advice of their management and agents to guide them into opportunities that align with their beliefs, so they would have a lot of trust in others that could potentially lead them to making bad deals.

I guess as consumers it is on us to make the informed choice. Do you have some other favourite brands that you will be now avoiding?

I try to buy cruelty free products where possible. Unfortunately most are not cruelty free.

    • Kimmi says:

You are very right, Megan. Most cosmetics are not, but I think the beauty world is trying to step up and take more positive steps to eradicate it. I hope within another 10 years it will all be a thing of the past. One can dream haha.
