The release of new hair styling tools are as certain as death and taxes. You would think that after all these years of hair gadgets being released, there would be nothing new to make? Well, if you thought that, you are so wrong!
VS Sassoon has come up with yet another great invention. The Big Hair Styler, a rotational brush mounted over a hair dryer. Sounds simple enough. While this exact tool is a new release for the company, the hot hair styler isn’t a completely new concept for them. Before this new release, the Hot Air Brush N’ Style was the non-rotational version and one I had personally found useful. The one thing that always troubled me with the Hot Air Brush N’ Style was that it was still a lot of work for me to try get volume or to shape my hair, so I ended up using it more as a regular dryer, somewhat defeating its purpose. When I heard about the new Big Hair Styler I thought this would be a welcome change.
What I Say ….
- Once I unpacked the tool and started to get it ready to use on my hair, I found the rotational head to be a little scary. I am terrible with directions so I was concerned how this would work. Usually I don’t read instructions …. but this time I did.
- I found the instructions to be quite simple. You slide the purple thingy from Off to Heat Setting 1 or Heat Setting 2, and then you press (hold down) either the LEFT or RIGHT arrow to make it turn. I decided to practice on one section of my hair right at the front until I felt comfortable with the directions. I found doing it in a mirror was actually more confusing than doing it without, but that is just me and my unco-ness with directions.
- The styling directions state to section your hair and to work with a 5cm piece at a time. I found this easy to do on the side of my head and the first bottom layers at the back, but the closer I got to the crown it was quite difficult for me. I found I had to go over each section more than once but I think this is something that improves the more times you use it, because than you know how hard and fast to pull it.
- For some of my finer flyaway hairs I tried to section those into smaller than 5cm, this worked well but my hair got quite hot to touch.
- The brush rotates at different speeds depending on the heat setting. As I have fine hair, I stuck to Heat Setting 1 which kept the barrel rotating at a lower speed.
- I found it was a much simpler way to blowdry and brush your hair in one, like hairdressers do.
- It really made my hair super soft. Love that!
- The one downside I found is that the handle is just way too big for my hand. I have really small hands so having a firm grip on the handle and holding down a rotate button at the same time was difficult for me. I also had that ‘hair dryer’ vibrating feeling in my hand for a couple minutes afterwards.
I think this tool would be best for those with long hair, and that don’t know how to style their hair with just a blow dryer and a barrel brush.
What VS Sassoon Say ….
VS Sassoon is so in love with the new super seventies-inspired ‘big hair’ trend, they’ve just launched the ‘Big Hair Styler’. Combining the benefits of a hairdryer with a rotating motorised brush in the one tool it makes big hair very easy. So how does it work? The unique styling action allows the large ceramic barrel brush to create fullness and body as you style whilst its soft bristles create brilliant shine and smoothness.
To use follow these simple steps:
1. Section the hair, place the styler under the section, close to the roots.
2. Move the brush through the hair section.
3. As the styler moves through the section, rotate the brush away from the head by pressing and holding the rotation direction switch. The brush should be rotating through the section of hair to create a brushing effect as it dries and styles the hair, adding volume.
Unique Features of the Big Hair Styler:
• 700 watts of power.
• Ionic conditioning technology™ harnesses an internal ionic generator which conditions hair to reduce static, leaving hair silky and shiny.
• Ceramic technology™ for even heat distribution.
• 2 heat/ speed settings plus a cool setting for variable style control.
• Multi-directional, motorised brush easily creates volume & shape.
• 2 rotation buttons rotate in clockwise & anticlockwise direction, again for ease of use.
• Large ceramic barrel gives fullness & body.
• Soft bristle brush for smoothness & shine.
Big Hair Trend Update – Big hair is a key direction for 2011 as seen on the runway and on the red carpet. Interpretations on this theme include long straight but textured and highly volumised hair (rock chic), root volume styling combined with curls at the ends (as the Big Hair Styler brush moves through the hair, twist it at the ends to achieve curls), big hair up-dos (perfect for the new-gen cocktail hour) and side-swept waves with vava voom body.

I was looking at these the other day! I’m insanely hair challenged though, so as much as I like the idea I have visions of tangling myself into a big snarled mess and having to cut it out of my hair.
…like, /really/ hair challenged.
The lure of big flicky hair is awfully tempting though. Hmm.
Well, Swatchgirl, I too am highly challenged in the hair styling stakes and I was certain I would end up having to shave my hair off after attempting to use this tool. I followed the instructions and tested it on the front bits of my hair first and I was shocked to have not ripped or tangled one single strand of hair.
The good thing about this tool is that it only turns so long as you are holding down the button, if you think your about to tangle just lift your finger off ….. or if you didn’t realise it was tangling, you can simply press the other button to make it turn the other way.
It really is shockingly simple to use, the only trouble I had is working out my ‘clockwise’ and ‘anti-clockwise’ but even when I pressed the wrong button my hair never tangled.
I say go into a store and have a play!
If I could combine two products I would combine the Clarisonic with a blush brush. Creating a rotating blush brush that would beautifully blend blush onto my cheeks.
That sounds like a good idea Jennise! Make sure you enter the competition by filling out the form above
2 products would be my straightening iron and conditioner (so that my hair feels light and fluffy and so the conditioner can seal in the split ends when they happen

looks good, but I prefer the flat iron because it works better for my hair, which is curly and thick, I have the Karmin g3 Salon Pro which is awesome, it causes less damage and keeps my hair smooth, shiny and very straight.
Ye I think for curly thick hair this wouldn’t be the right tool for you. Thanks for commenting Monique!
