READER QUESTION: Lip Balm Recommendations

Bobbi Brown Lip Balm SPF 15

Despite the fact I have no professional experience with beauty products, I still get asked for recommendations …. a lot. I personally find it quite flattering, but I don’t always have an answer. Out of every product in the entire beauty industry, the one thing I get asked most often is to recommend a good lip balm.

Today’s reader question does not belong to any one reader. It belongs to dozens, maybe even hundreds (I really don’t count). While I usually struggle to think of just one product I can recommend in these situations, I scream for joy when someone asks what lip balm do I recommend. Why? Because I have TWO great ones!

Comvita –  Nourishing Lip Treatment

This lip balm packs the goodness of HUNI®XA Manuka Honey, a unique and exclusive formula from a Beautiful Place (that’s their slogan) in New Zealand. I will keep it brief by saying this Manuka Honey is the worlds best and the good it can do for our skin is amazing. The lip balm is extremely thick and it takes quite a bit of squeezing to ease it out of the tube, but once you get just a tiny little amount that is all you need.

A pin point amount spreads over the lips so easily and instantly hydrates even the most chapped lips. As someone who personally who has horrific dehydrated lips, this has been a life saver. It is the ultimate in blocking environmental damage and restoring a my lips to a youthful pout.

Bobbi Brown – Lip Balm SPF 15

I only discovered this product from Bobbi Brown approx a month ago, and it is quickly becoming my lip balm of choice. Just like the Comvita balm, you only need a tiny amount, it hydrates lips quick snap and protects against environmental havoc. However, there are two reasons I am loving it more than the Comvita and one reason I am not.

First up, the loving part ….

  1. IT HAS SPF! This is super important for my lips because I have a dangerous sun spot right on the fleshiest part. But, everyone should make sure they have a strong SPF on their lips to stop premature aging and any risk of creating a skin cancer.
  2. It is the perfect base for lipstick. My dehydrated lips they are prone to flaking, making a perfect lipstick application impossible. Since using this Bobbi Brown balm under lippy I have been able to get a smooth application from every lipstick. Love it!

And why I am not …. well, it is in a pot. I hate putting my fingers in pots so I tend to leave this balm at home where I know I have access to a lip brush. I so wish there was a tube form!

Love the balms you picked out! I would have to say the most cost effective balm on the market right now would be Maybelline Baby Lips!

I bought this in mid February for $3.99 and I’m just using the remainder of it today! So for two months (ish) of use it’s pretty long lasting! I also love the scents and the feel, really does make the lips soft!

I’m also a fan of Lanolips and think that their Lemonade LipAid is pretty fab :-)

I’ll have a post up later today reviewing Maybelline Baby Lips and thank you again for deleting my first comment! My brain is not functioning today.

I am yet to give the Maybelline baby lips a go but based on your fine words I am going to have to give it a go!

I do have the Lanolips in Apple but I find it rather glossy for use as a balm, but I absolutely love it for an all in one gloss (it too has SPF!). I am looking forward to your post later today!!

I am pretty partial to Lucas Papaw Ointment. It usually costs $4 from the supermarket or chemist. It’s a great lip balm but doubles up as a treatment for insect bites, rashes, burns etc. Very handy stuff.

Burts Bees Lip Shimmer is also great if you want something a bit more colourful. They have a range of nice subtle shades and the balm has beeswax, honey and mint which leaves your lips tingly.

I used to use Paw Paw ointment all the time on my lips, but I only found it to be effective as a wind barrier, rather than hydrating my lips. However, when I burn myself (which is often. I am a klutz) it is the first thing I reach for!

Burt’ Bees sounds lovely so I think I will add that to my Shopping List. Great recommendation!

Such a big fan of the Bobbi Brown lip balm! Extra points with the SPF! My other faves will have to be Fresh’s Sugar Lip Treatment with SPF and Yes to Carrots Pomegranate Lip Butter (SO GOOD!) :D

One of my girlfriends swears by good ole vaseline! I tried it once and it’s actually quite effective. But I usually go with the aussie-made NATIO lip balm.

    • Kimmi says:

Hi Kimberley, I used to use the specially formulated Vaseline one for lips and that one is amazing, but regular Vaseline can be quite damaging to someone with dry lips. Petroleum Jelly, which us what regular Vaseline is, works great as a barrier from wind, but has no hydrating properties.

If you already have smooth lips it can be a good option but I would discourage using it if you are dehydrated.

I have heard the Jack Black one is fantastic. hey make a mint one and a camomile one. I have yet to try it but I really would love to. I think the brand was created for guys, but that doesn’t mean we can’t use it…
