My Top 5 Eyeshadow Palettes of 2010 and Competition

Urban Decay Naked Palette Close-Up CROP

I love palettes. I love shopping. Brilliant idea = a post about my favourite purchases of palettes. Yes, being this intelligent is a burden.

2010 was year of the palette for me. Usually I purchase duos, trios maybe even a quad but rarely do I buy multiple palettes in a year despite how much I love them. This year I couldn’t resist because it seemed every brand on earth was coming up with marvelous collections I couldn’t pass up. Here are my top 5…

Tarte - Ten Limited Edition Collector’s Palette

Limited Edition is one of my fave phrases as you well and truly know but I actually like this palette for more than just that. Tarte is natural beauty at is best and just because it has good stuff for your skin in it, you don’t lose any WOW factor. This palette contains 10 full-sized varied hues that can create endless amounts of looks PLUS a double-ended eyeliner, a full-size shadow brush and a mini tube of Lights, Camera, Lashes. The best part of all is that the palette has a magnetic base which allows you to refill the shadows when you run out. Brilliant!

It also comes with an instruction card on how to achieve two sexy looks, Softly Smokey and Jewel-Toned.

Available from Sephora for US $44

Urban Decay – Naked Palette

You may or may not have heard about this palette but let’s just say popular is a huge understatement. This baby sold out quicker than …. bugger, I can’t think of a good analogy. Anyway, it packs 12 brilliant neutral shades that alone create a great look but can also boost your entire make-up wardrobe. If we were talking fashion these shadows would be like the designer basics that would last you season after season. They are your everything!

Along with the 12 shadows you also get a double-ended liner pencil and a mini tube of their award winning Eyeshadow Primer Potion.

Availability is difficult as it was so popular. You can be notified by Sephora as soon as it becomes available. US $44 rrp

Lorac - Private Affair Palette

Ok I have to admit I bought this palette mostly for the packaging. It just looked so flash with its mock-croc Purple outer and Black satin lining. You flip the top to reveal 6 grown-up, pigment-rich shades of shadow and a landscape mirror. What’s that you say? Where are the Brushes? Well slide out that little draw on your right and you will find a double-ended shadow brush and a mini tube of Lorac Behind The Scenes Eye Primer.

Made exclusively for Sephora, it is available for US $38.

Crown Brush – 88 Colour Shimmer Palette

The best all-round palette. Has all the colours of the rainbow and even though this is the ‘Shimmer’ palette, it also has many Matte colours. I purchased mine while at the IMATS show back in September.

AU $35 from Crown Brush and there are other varieties too, Matte or Warm Colours. Also available if you are in the USA, UK or Europe

NYX Cosmetics – Bronze Smokey Look Kit

I bought this item in the USA while on my New York tour of duty for a whopping US $9.95 (bargain alert!) from a little beauty store on 35th St named Beauty 35. The box comes with clear step-by-step instructions on how to create a smokey eye look and all the colours you need are in one handy compact. It also has 2 lip colours and applicators hidden in a secret draw!

AU $19.95 from Crush Cosmetics. They are Australian but they ship worldwide! US customers can by NYX directly online but it looks like they are no longer selling this particular item.

Hi Zoe, I agree, it is a little uncool that we don’t know what the names are for the shadows but work amazingly. It is really funny that it cost almost the same in AU dollars as it does in pounds. If I used AU dollars to buy it from the UK it would cost me about $80 due to the conversion fee. Weird!

Thanks so much for the comment lovely :)
