DMK Skincare Challenge – Before & After Photos, Review Final Thoughts and the Future

It has now been 4 months since I started my life changing skincare challenge with Dannè Montague-King. The trial officially ran for 3 months so now that a month has passed, I feel it is appropriate to share with you my final thoughts. In a nutshell, they are a mix of jubilation and heartache.

I apologise now if this post is a little long for your liking. The experience has brought so much to my life and I really want to share it with you all. Most importantly I want to read your comments afterwards so make sure you tell me what you think!

What I Did For 3 Months

First I will give you a little refresher on the program. I started off with a complete overhaul of my at-home skincare regime. It was a little overwhelming but it didn’t take long for me to master every step. After 19 days I shared with you my updated regime which included more daily products, weekly clinic treatments, IPL and a very unique masque. In my eyes the differences were already enormous but I had no idea how much better things would get.

After 2 months my skin was getting better by the day, but my dark circles under my eyes were still quite visible (in my opinion). Things were taken up a notch with 2 rounds of the Bihaku Treatment, a ‘baby peel’ specifically used around my eyes.

After that I continued with my regular at-home regime, weekly clinic treatments and one more IPL session. It was a jam packed quarter year.

Final Thoughts

I have updated you on my thoughts about DMK throughout my journey, but having stopped the treatment for a whole month I now notice things that I hadn’t picked up on before. My final thoughts on the Dannè Montague-King brand, their way of approaching skincare and my personal progress all boil down to a simple statement ….. this is serious s#!t.

So, what do I mean by that? Well, it is actually rather simple. DMK means business ….

  • There are no fancy packaging (the packaging is just plain and functional), attractive colours or pretty scents.
  • Looking at the bottles or reading the descriptions doesn’t tell you much about picking what is right for you, and that is a very good thing. This skincare is all about prescription. It is between you and your DMK therapist to manage your routine and achieve your goals. Your hand is held the entire way.
  • Any treatment or product regime you go on with them is strongly supported by one key product. Broad spectrum SPF30 sunscreen. It doesn’t matter what you do with your skin because if you don’t use that one product everyday you may as well just forget about looking after your skin at all.
  • The DMK way of skincare is an investment in time and money. It is not a one-trick pony that promises amazing results without any effort. You need to stick to what they tell you and if you do then you will be shocked at the results (see mine below).
  • As mentioned in my last point, it is a financial investment, but you are not investing in ‘ok’ skin or even ‘pretty good’ skin. You are investing in flawless, manageable, lustworthy skin. While the products and treatments may cost no more than most high-end or even department store brands, there is a significant difference in that most of the time you pay those prices for something that looks nice in your bathroom and smells pretty. That is not what DMK is about. DMK is about results.

My Results and The Future

The below photos will say a lot but I do have a few words on the matter. I will start by openly admitting that my skin before starting this program wasn’t horrible. I know that, and I know a lot of people thought I was such a drama queen for caring about the small nuances I did have. But, one of the big reasons behind starting this blog was to share with you my quest for perfection. I am vain, and happy to admit it. I don’t want to age. I want beautiful flawless skin for as long as possible, and I was and still am willing to try anything to get it. Funnily enough, I have found my answer (for now).

Today I am declaring my search for perfect skin over (for now). My quest for perfect skin has gone on for well over a decade, and without revealing my age I can say that I started using skincare products before puberty had even struck. I have NEVER had a reaction to any skincare like I have with DMK. The results have been so positive that it has left me speechless. I have actually tried to write this post a dozen times but I kept rambling on (kind of still am).

After a very long thought process I have decided there is no other skincare system I want to be using twice a day. So what does that mean for The Plastic Diaries? Well, let’s not forget that we talk about EVERYTHING beauty on this blog, not just skincare. However, there will be some changes. My previous skincare reviews have been based on 30 days or more of trialing, and not mixing it with any other products from another brand. I chose this way because I wanted my reviews to be based 100% on my untainted experience with a product/range. I wanted to report my findings accurately and truthfully, but now I feel I can no longer go on with back to back 30 day trials. Changing skincare regimes every 30 days was not my intention for my skin. My intention was perfection, and for now I have found that with DMK.

Moving forward there will definitely still be a lot of skincare chatter and reviews. There are always going to be new and exciting adventures in the way of skincare products but for now there will be less of those personal reviews by me. I will be recruiting some of my trusted friends who are on their own quest for perfection to give new products a go. Plus, there are some products I will never give up and will continue to use every now and then when I want a little luxury (you know, the fancy ones with pretty scents). There will be lots of posts on those to come.

This change is a little upsetting but I truly feel blessed to have the skin I have now and I do not want it to change for some time. Of course, I will keep you posted on my thoughts and the day I do venture away you will know about it.

Now, let’s get to the good stuff …. PHOTOS

Before & Afters

These photos are taken by a special camera system used at DMK that shows the layers of the skin by using different lights. There is a set of normal images with a standard RGB light, a set with a UV light to show pigmentation beneath the skin, and a final set to show redness in my skin (usually to detect capillaries).

Unfortunately DMK were unable to retrieve all the photos off the special computer from my first visit, so I have decided to use the photos from the second one on 3 February 2011, so you can see a true side-by-side before and after image.

I’ve definitely noticed a change for the better in your skin over the past few months – the vitamin C part of the routine in particular has given you a lit-from-within glow and your complexion has been enviously peaches and cream.

Were you a regular user of sun protection before?

    • Kimmi says:

YAY! It is good to hear that someone else can see what I see.

I was a regular user of sun protection before but not EVERY DAY. I only looked at the SPF factor in products and not whether it was broad spectrum (protection against UVA and UVB). I always knew that I needed a high protection from both but I figured I always avoid the sun so do I really need to be that over zealous. The answer is YES, I really do because as you can see from the pigmentation photos, I was just not doing enough.

They really explained things to me in a way I could understand the importance of broad spectrum. Already having had skin cancer, it is scary to think I got it even though I thought I was doing everything to avoid the risks.

  2. I agree, your skin looks amazing. I think I wear sunscreen but I’m not that careful either. Are you using a DMK sunscreen?

    • Kimmi says:

Hi Christina, It was something I thought I was careful about until they educated me a little further. I really thought I was doing a good job but it turns out there is a big difference in sunscreen. I now use the DMK Transdermal Sunscreen which is broad spectrum SPF 30.

  3. Norlin says:

I can definitely see a difference in your skin. There’s less pigmentation (that’s also my downfall), even though to the naked eye it might not have been much to begin with. But like you, it’s great to see any kind of improvement no matter how slight. Your skin does look a lot brighter in the after photos too. Congrats, you’ve found your perfect skin care…now I’m off to find mine. :)

    • Kimmi says:

It find it really fascinating how pigmentation works. Until recently (like the last 5 years) I never knew that ‘pigmentation’ was my issue. I always thought pigmentation was limited to moles and sunspots, so I always described my skin as multi-coloured patches.

Just knowing what skin problems you have is hard enough to work out let alone how to fix them. Now that I look back on those UV before and after shots it is amazing how much of a difference I can see. To me, the before pictures looked so dark, like I had no forehead! Now I think you can at least see some normal white skin without any spots. Amazing hahaha.

      • I read an interesting article somehwere…can’t remember where…that pigmentation is an area scientists are working on. They are trying to discover why, when you are born, you have perfectly even skin tone but then as you age, something goes crazy causing all different levels pigment. Obviously it is the sun that causes it, but what happens that makes one cell spurt out excessive melanin to become highly pigmented whilst the cell next to it does.

  4. I also want to add that i am so impressed with your commitment to this routine. I, like you, am also on the quest for perfection, but part of my hopes to never find my holy grail as I love testing products so much – I am always so keen to move on to the next one!! So I guess I had better avoid DMK as my quest may also come to an abrupt end!!

How much of you results do you think can be attributed to the DMK skin care and how much to the treatments you had? Do you still need to have further treatments done or only when an issue pops up?

    • Kimmi says:

That is a great question Sarah!

I have always believed that no at home skincare can be your ONLY effort in fighting aging, and I still believe that, and DMK do aswell.

My belief is that at least every 6-8 weeks a proper treatment should be done, and the at home regime should be used to maintain results. Our skin never stops aging so it would be unrealistic to think that these results are the end of my worries. All skincare, no matter what it is, should always be used in conjunction with professional treatments. Which ones and how often comes down to your own preferences and beliefs.

Thank you for your great comments. I love how in depth they are and that you really do seem to have an interest in good skin :)

    • Kimmi says:

I am so glad you can see the changes. I know at first glance everything looks the se but when you focus in on specific areas I can see the difference, and I am glad others can too.
