The final day of Cosmoprof North America fast approached and I awoke that morning with stress on my mind. After Day 1 and Day 2, I had only managed to see a quarter of the exhibition floor. ONE QUARTER. I had 5 hours left and approximately 500 stands to see. Ok, 100 stands per hour, that sounds easy, right? WRONG.
My feet were blistered, I was tired and my shoulders couldn’t possibly carry another branded bag. But, this was the new career path I have chosen and by god I was going to do it. This was the day I wanted to cram as much in as possible, and the more I moved through the isles, passing dozens of stands, I noticed the trends really starting to emerge.
Hair Feathers and Hair Tinsel
The biggest and by far most ‘outrageous’ trend on show was the hair feathers craze. There were plenty of exhibitors who purely sold Hair Feathers, and many others who also were selling Hair Tinsel. I briefly mentioned this in my Day 1 post, when I came across Hair Flairs. After seeing how many stands were flogging the stuff, I decided to return to the Hair Flairs stand and ask them more about it.
Every where I looked, people wore hair feathers
Hair feathers
The result was this ….
Yes, I got Hair Feathers. To be fair, it was all in the name of research and I will have a very detailed, and educational, post for you coming up. What I will say now is that yes, the feathers are real, and no, I would never pay money for them. You will have to wait a little longer to find out why!
While I am not sure if the Hair Tinsel will become a trend, I have no doubt that Hair Feathers are only just beginning. According to some LA industry insiders, these are pretty much considered ‘over’ in their eyes. However, it is about to go crazy in ‘middle’ America, and the UK and Europe are booming, so it is safe to say Australia will be next.
Brilliant Packaging
Nothing sucks me in more than good packaging so I was really glad to see some emerging brands understand the importance of packaging, and therefore put on a good show.
Rock Your Hair by Michael O’Rourke was a clear stand-out to me. It was bright, funky, in your face and totally over-the-top. For a range of volumising hair products, I think it was the perfect alignment. Plus all the products have a diamanté heart on the front which caught my eye (well, nearly blinded me).
Love & Toast went all out with their stand by taking their packaging thumbing and bringing it to life. The space allowed all their products to be displayed clearly but in an environment that felt like the brand. It was genius, and if they were allowing people to buy products then and there, I would have bought the entire lot!
New Brands
The discovery of new brands is always thrilling. I will be showing you more detailed reviews later on but two new brands that stood out to me were Layla Cosmetics from Italy and Rain Cosmetics from the USA.
If you thought Shatter nail polish was rad, then this new invention from Layla Cosmetics will make your jaw drop. Magneffect is magnetic nail polish. Yep, magnetic. It is genius and I will be telling you all about it very soon.
US born cosmetic company Rain Cosmetics is already a stand-out in their native land of Las Vegas. Yes, this brand was born, and inspired by, the crazy city that is Las Vegas. True to the lines inspiration, the product range is beautiful, bold and diverse. I have a feeling this brand is the next ‘one to watch’. I could totally see it in Sephora stores globally, and on must-buy lists before you can blink. More on this brand coming up soon!
That brings me to the end of my day-to-day Cosmoprof North America recaps. It was amazing. It was fun. It will keep me busy with content for the next few months!

Kimmi, Kimmi, Kimmi…you are the beauty equivalent of a d*ck tease. Its just not fair of you to go and get us all excited about new beauty products, such as Magnaeffect, and then, just as we reach the peak of arousal you dop a line like ‘It is genius and I will be telling you all about it very soon.’. Not good enough, Kimmi. I am feeling very unsatisfied and want you to tell me about it NOW…guess I’ll just have to satisfy myself with my own beauty products until you are ready to put out!! (though I did just get a jar of DermaQuest 3D stem cell cream so that will keep me pretty satisfied for a while!!)
I was totally overwhelmed by the Sydney spa and beauty expo so I literally cannot imagine how big cosmoprof is. For you to only get through a quarter in 2 days is crazy!! I’m looking forward to your posts over then next few months…especially the magnaeffect!!
Sarah, I am terribly sorry. I have to agree with you. I am a complete and utter b!#$h. BUT, I know many of my readers do not like posts that go on forever, and at the same time, this post was about many things I discovered. I wanted to reserve my ranting about specific products to their own post. I hope you trust me when I say that it will be worth it
hey Kimmi,
xxxxx
i decided not to get the feathers not my thing really but im proud to say i got ordered hair tinsel!!
Ohhhhh I hope you will wear it at ABBW!! I think it would look awesome in your hair. What colour did you get??
You looked adorable with the feathers, but I am just not buying into this trend. I will wait for the next best thing to come along. Thanks you for the honest review
Thank you Monique! It is good to hear I am not the only one not completely loving it.
Hair Feathers are HUGE down here in South Texas – people pay up to $50 to have ONE feather placed!!! It’s insane. I just keep thinking my cat is going to attack me in the middle of the night and rip it out.
WOW, 50 US dollars? Ok that is insane. In Australian dollars i would understand because everything is expensive here, but US, no way! Especially know that we know how much each feather really costs to buy wholesale. Ridic.
Ok…I’ll trust you…but next time warn me when you are stopping at second base and not going all the way!!
Have you done a blog schedule?? I’d be totally overwhelmed with the amount of material you have! I tend to get blogger block when I have too many posts that need writing. I get overwhelmed by my options and end up choosing none! But I think I am going to start going blog schedules myself so I can know exactly what I am going to write about when I sit down.
Hahaha ok fine, I will warn you with big bold letters next time.
Yes, I usually use blog schedules for regular content, but this content is a little different. I am sort of winging it based on how I unpack my suitcase. It is safe to say I have only unpacked 1 of 4 suitcases so far. Eep!
Wow, those hair feathers and tinsel look incredibly tacky.
I can’t believe they would be considered a trend anywhere, apart from among pre-pubescent girls in the early 90′s
Hi Freya, hehe I agree they aren’t everyones cup of tea. The first thing my mother said upon seeing them was “Oh, we had those in the ’80s!”.
