Veet – Suprem’Essence In-Shower Hair Removal Cream Review

Veet Suprem'Essence In-Shower Hair Removal Cream with Sponge

The warm weather is heading our way and those thick leggings are stylish (and hide your winter ‘coat’) but you can’t keep them on for the next 6 months. Don’t get me wrong, I love the warm weather but when it comes to female grooming it is just SUCH a hassle. Males really don’t understand the painfulness of having to keep ourselves completely hair free (I mean body hair, duh!).

I have a funny love-hate relationship with hair removal and I don’t think I would be alone in this, but feel free to tell me if I am a unique freak. I hate the time and effort it takes to remove the hair. I know I am lazy but it seems like there was no easy way to remove hair and make it last for more than a day or four. That would be the hate side. On the other hand, I love hair removal because when you take it all away you’re left with a smooth body, you feel lighter and slimmer (again, is that just me?).

My dislike has been in my life the longest. Now to give you a real understanding behind this upcoming story you must keep the following in mind:

  • I have a little bit of Israeli heritage in me and if you don’t know Israelis then I will spell it out…… hair is thick and dark. Thick AND dark!
  • I didn’t think about Body Hair because no one had yet told me that it was on its way. Sure we had those Sex Education classes at school and we were told about puberty but I mustn’t have been listening (or I was sleeping. I slept a lot at school. You can probably tell by my bad grammar) when they briefly discussed the Body Hair topic.
  • It was the mid-1990s

So at the ripe old age of 10 years old (remember, Israeli heritage) I started to get a little bit of leg hair. I ignored it and thought everyone would have it or be getting it, and mum didn’t say anything. This hair growth was then ignored for the following 2 years until one day in school, actually it was DURING the Multicultural Day march around the playground that a bunch of boys started to tease me for having leg hair. I was livid! I didn’t understand what was going on but I knew it was one of those moments that would scar me for life. I spent the rest of the afternoon in the bathrooms trying to pull my leg hairs out with my fingers. Of course, that didn’t work so as soon as the home time bell rang I ran from the school grounds all the way home (4 blocks and a large hill away). Finally, I was in the safe haven that is my home, right? WRONG. Like any good young girl who has been humiliated I kept it to myself. I didn’t want to talk about. Then later that evening, my father the delightful gentle man that he is (*sarcasm*) attempts to give me some words of wisdom that went a little something like this:

“When are you going to shave your legs? Look at them. They are disgusting!”

It was like the school bullies and my father had a meeting and decided that day was the day! After busting into tears and running to my room, I decided I would need some advice. I frantically flicked through the latest Dolly magazine to see if there was any help on removing body hair for the first time (there wasn’t) and then I knew I had to ask mum. Her answer to everything had always been wax. I was so scared of pain that I wasn’t willing to give it a go, and mum with her old-fashioned ways thought shaving was out of the question because hair grows back even thicker. We compromised and after a quick trip to the chemist we were ready to give depilatory creams a shot.

My first memories of using a hair removal cream weren’t great. The formula wreaked, there was more cream on the bathroom floor then on my legs, it was really hard to get an ‘even layer’ and I had to stand around for 15 minutes with minimal movement or letting my legs touch. The underarms were even worse cause the cream was closer to my nose so it stank more, and I had to hold my arms up for 15 minutes! All complaining aside, it was the best method for me at that time and I stuck with it for a few years before trying the other hair removal options.

Fast forward a decade and I am back to experimenting with hair removal options. I find I do this every so often with a beauty product because I feel I need the change. It was perfect timing too because Veet had launched their brand new range of Hair Removal products called Suprem’Essence right when I was reviewing my options. It had been a long time since using hair removal cream so I saw this as the big sign to try it again. Since my experimentation with the product in the mid-90s the formulas and applications had changed dramatically. There were new and far more convenient ways to use this pain free method of hair removal which led me to decide to give it a go but I was curious as to why Suprem’Essence was different to their existing ranges.

Veet explained it with these finely crafted words:

“Enriched with luxurious essential oils and a velvet rose fragrance, the new Suprem’Essence range will leave the skin moisturised, touchably smooth and beautiful.”

The news of a new scent was all I needed for me to give it a go (…oh and it is my duty as a beauty blogger!). I was excited, but still hesitant. I decided to try out the Veet Suprem’Essence In-Shower Hair Removal Cream because I wanted the hassle-free method and nothing says ‘hassle-free’ to me like combining it with your shower ritual. The first thing I noticed was the amazingly quick process time of just 3-6 minutes. The old 15 minutes sounded like an hour against the new 3 minutes!

The In-Shower Hair Removal Cream comes with a dual sided sponge for application and removal. I simply spread on the cream using the soft coloured side and it was surprisingly easy to keep the layers even which used to be difficult. The fragrance was sweet & subtle but it covered that nasty depilatory cream smell that is still common, and being a rose fragrance it packed a feminine punch.

Now the instructions said to wait for 1 minute before jumping in the shower and staying out of a direct water stream. It said the formula has water-resistant ingredients so any water spray wouldn’t affect the removal process. I didn’t really think about how to stay out of a direct stream until I was in the shower so I mostly stood in the corner completely away from the shower head. It was freezing but when the remaining 2 minutes was up I went to the water and started to wet my head so I could get shampooing out of the way. I watched my legs closely and no mater how much water splashed about or bounced of tiles, the cream didn’t budge. It was amazing, I couldn’t believe that it wasn’t going to wash away easily so I thought I would be a smart-ass and put my leg directly under the water. Sure enough, it washed away so I guess the lesson there is to trust the instructions.

To remove the hair & cream I just had to flip the applicator sponge over to the white side and massage off with small circular motions. Despite my early cheekiness to check if the cream would run off, all hair did come away easily and it seemed the 3 minutes it was left on was all it needed. One thing I didn’t really like was that the sponge is really small (even for my baby hands) so you have to rinse it off frequently, but that is such a minor flaw in an otherwise brilliant product.

After my shower I patted dry my legs and was shocked to feel how silky smooth they were. For me, it is extremely rare to have silky legs after hair removal and I am usually actually dried out to the point of flaking. I was really happy and still, a week after trying it I have had no regrowth!

I have always wondered if you can use Veet, erm, ‘Down There’. Any ideas?! Lol. Sorry, TMI!!

And how long does it take for leg hair to grow back? Same as shaving?

    • Kimberly says:

Hi Cassie, Veet is PERFECT for ‘down there’ and they even have special Bikini formulas designed for thicker hair. Regular Veet works just as well but you need to leave it on longer than you would for leg hair, say around the 6 minute mark.

Grow back I find is similar to shaving but on occasion I have got an extra day or two before seeing stubble!

  2. [...] removal subject is for me. If you want to find out the horrific story you will need to refer to the Veet post. Nowadays I am a little better with the pain factor. Waxing still runs a shiver through my spine [...]
