Just when you thought I found you all the crackle, shatter, crackling polishes out there, I can assure you I am not even close. As this nail fad continues, more and more daring creations are coming out of the big nail polish producers. Today I am taking a look at BYS and their version called Cracked. More specifically, I am looking at a limited edition kit that includes one of their famous Neon lacquers.
Base Coat: Get Ink Make It Pink
This is a perfect neon pink. To me it looks less like your standard Stablo highlighter and more like Barbie at a rave. Such an awesome colour and so glad to have it in my kit now!!
I used three coats of this polish.
Crackle Coat: Cracked Finish Black
This crackle polish is by far the thickest in comparison to OPI and China Glaze and the effect is again completely different. The effect of this polish is much finer cracks and allows only a hint of base colour to come through. I would liken the print to more like snake skin. The finish is also quite shiny as opposed to the competitors.
As I swatched each nail, starting at the little finger, I realised I had to do thinner coats. You will see this because more lines appear with each nail, ending at the thumb which has the most cracks.
By the time I got to the thumb I had wiped the brush on the rim until I couldn’t see any loose droplets of polish. I truly thought there was no polish left on the brush but it still covered my nail. My only piece of advise with this crackle coat is wipe the brush off until there is next to no polish on it.
The reason they it looks like I have only painted down the middle of my nail was because I assumed it would have some self-levelling properties like OPI and China Glaze has. This is not the case, so you have to apply it far more carefully.
Top Coat
It comes with a clear shine top coat which is perfect for setting the look. The lacquers themselves are high shine so you don’t need the top coat to be overly shiney anyway. It is best used as a final seal to make your paint job last as long as possible.
What I Say ….
I love the base colour and will wear it by itself as much as I will wear it with the cool effect black coat. The Cracked coat gives a real dark, vampy look that would be impossible to create with the other competitors. The set is a total winner in my books.
What BYS Says ….
BYS Cracked Nail Polish is a complete three-step process including a coloured base coat, a cracked nail polish and a top coat to help effortlessly create the cracked look. Simply apply the base coat with colour of choice, wait for it to dry, and then apply cracked nail polish and watch as the cracked design appears. Once dry, apply the top coat to seal and extend the wear of the polish.

I think it looks like crocodile underbelly. From your swatching I can barely even see the undercoat even though it is so bright on it’s own!!!
I like the undercoat colour but would be disappointed if I had bought the set as I would want the cracks to be thicker. Particularly when you compare the swatches to the press release images (which look great)!
Hi Nadia,
I get what you mean, it does look different to the pack shot but with some practice you can totally achieve it. My photos are terrible because I don’t have a macro lens for my camera but in person it looked quite good. I would say the pinky finger looked the worst because I just applied way to much.
If you are a nail effects fan I would highly recommend it. AU $15 for the 3-lacquer set is just amazing.
Thanks for the comment!
